We often joke, "You can't pick a bad spot on the lake." While this may ring true as each bay, island, and channel offer a beautiful view, a great swimming spot, or a chance at some of the biggest fish in Montana, there are a few spots to be sure not to miss. First of which is Wild Horse Island. A 2,160-acre island within Flathead Lake offers a rare experience surrounding a unique island ecosystem. With an easy-going trail system, a hike offers the chance to observe a variety of wildlife species, from deer and bald eagles to bighorn sheep and of course horses. The latter two species have an interesting relationship with the island. Due to its ideal habitat, the Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep herd flourished. With struggling populations across their native ranges in the west, these sheep are transplanted from the island to areas where they were historically present to help bolster nationwide populations. The world record ram for horn growth once roamed the island. His genetics live on as the current band of rams on the island are likely some of the largest living rams in the state, possibly even North America. The horses are there to honor the Kootenai Tribe and their history with the island. The Kootenai Tribe found a unique way of utilizing the island by pasturing their extra horses to keep them from being stolen by other tribes. Painted Rocks, situated on the western shore of Flathead Lake, holds immense historical significance for the region. These ancient pictographs, dating back nearly 3,000 years, offer a glimpse into Flathead Lake's cultural heritage. Only viewable by water, observing the diverse rock art that reflects the traditions and stories of these indigenous peoples. The preservation of Painted Rocks is crucial, so please view it from a boat only.
Flathead Lake is the 79th largest natural freshwater lake in the world. By no surprise, there are a lot of areas of the lake to explore. We have yet to find a bad spot on the lake, however some of our favorites would include the Narrows, East Bay, and Skidoo Bay. The Narrows are a chain of islands on the south end of the lake. Before the Seli'š Ksanka Qlispe' Dam, also known as SKQ Dam, (previously known as the Kerr Dam), the Narrows were the southern shores of the lake. With the expansion of the lake, the Narrows are now a stunning chain of islands that offer a unique view of the lake in its immensity. East Bay is cradled at the base of the Mission Mountains, offering great views down the range. The shoreline of East Bay is relatively undeveloped, making it a fantastic area for sightseeing. It also has some of the warmest water due to shallower lake levels. Flathead Lakes's average water temperature is only 68°F in the summer. Meanwhile, East Bay often sees temperatures rise into the 70s°F. This is sure to be appreciated. Similarly, Skidoo Bay has a stunning mountain backdrop. This view, combined with a beautiful shoreline, provides a perfect spot for a leisurely cruise.
